Abstract:
|
Before it became Silicon Valley, this area was the center of development for RF and microwave research. The technology evolved from WWII requirements and was the subject of intense research at Stanford University.
This effort led to the start up of companies such as HP, Lytton, Varian and Watkins Johnson, and Silicon Valley, as we know it today, emerged from the development of these companies.
Mark Roos, the chairman/CEO and cofounder of Roos Instruments. He joined Hewlett-Packard as a development engineer in the Network Analysis Division. In 1978, he received his M.S.E.E. from Stanford University. After five years as a development engineer, in July 1980, shortly after receiving his MBS from Santa Clara University, Roos became the marketing product manager for HP's microwave scalar and vector RF instrumentation product line.
In October 1982, Mark joined EIP Microwave as an engineering manager and became its VP of R&D. In June 1989, he started Roos Instruments as a sole proprietorship. Early in 1994, RI won a benchmark at Motorola with the RI7100A resulting in the first major sale for the company. As the business prospered and it looked like Roos Instruments had become a real company, RI Inc was founded on April 4, 1994. The company remains privately held with about 25 employees - eighteen of those are professionals - and has annual revenue in the $10 million range.

Topic:: Location Based Services: From Promise to Reality
(1) Google Maps for Mobile with My Location
(2) Important Features of My Location
(3) How it works and its challenges
Speaker: Ravi Jain is currently with Google, Mountain View, California, as a manager for mobile engineering efforts in mobile advertising, location based services, and syndicated mobile search. From 2002 to 2005 he was Vice President and Director of the Network Services and Security Lab in DoCoMo USA Labs. At DoCoMo he led the US team designing DoCoMo's 4th generation (4G) core network in three key areas: mobility management, QoS and security. From 1992 to 2002 he was in Applied Research, Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bellcore) working on mobile wireless architectures, algorithms, protocols and middleware, as well as open programmable networks. Prior to that he worked for several years on systems and communications software development, performance modeling, and parallel programming.
Ravi received the Ph. D. in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin in 1992, and has numerous publications and patents in the wireless area. Ravi is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Upsilon Pi Epsilon, ACM, and a Fellow of the IEEE.
